Hello everyone, I donīt post too often so I will quickly reintroduce
myself. I am an American IBCLC living in Munich Germany working in a
maternity hospital (3000 deliveries a year). I donīt do any private
consulting and therefore have very little experience with the older
nursing baby. In spite of that I occassionally receive phone calls from
mothers asking for advice. Yesterday a mother of a 4 month old called
to tell me that she got her period very soon after the birth of her
baby, she is only breastfeeding. The problem is that in the few days
before and a few days after the begin of her period she notices a
drastic reduction in her milk supply and this last time had to
supplement. She is very unhappy with this solution because she has
allergies and would like to nurse exclusively until the baby in at least
6 months old. She had a similar problem with her first baby but got
through by just nursing more often. My spontaneous advice was to pump in
addition to nursing to build up a supply in the freezer so that the baby
will only be receiving breastmilk and to build up her supply even more
so that when the amount periodically decreases she might still have
enough. Has anyone else had experience with something like this? What
can I tell her?

Thanks a lot - from Linda who is celebrating her birthday today
