Jennifer, about the two moms who surprised you by
saying one thing & doing another:

I see this all the time through support meetings. No
psyche background here, just my observation!

Some moms seem to work out mixed feelings with various
helpers as part of the path to the goal: they want to
bf but are apprehensive about certain issues so the
negative talk apparently helps them battle their way
forward. (If they fail, well, it's not like they
didn't warn us!)

Other moms "know they should bf" but don't want to &
certainly don't want to announce it from the outset
since they "know better" & don't want to be harassed.
Later they can say things like "I tried / my doctor
said in my case XYZ / I even called La Leche League /
etc"

I once worked with an interesting pair of friends who
attended support meetings together. Mom #1 was
thrilled to be pregnant, couldn't wait to bf, beamed
with anticipation. Mom #2 showed up in a suit,
straight from work, sputtering that she couldn't
possibly be pregnant, didn't have time for this, &
certainly didn't belong in a room full of earth
mothers. Mom #1 "failed to bf" within weeks. Mom #2
showed up at her first pp mtg, her beautiful long hair
hacked off like Joan of Arc, babe cemented to breast,
glowing. Mom #2 became a LLLL.

Go figure.

Breastfeeding seems to be bigger than all of us, and
women more mysterious.
