Deanne,

Im' sorry I don't have any references on hand for you, but if you
don't mind, I'd like to share my mom's story.

She was told she could never have kids after suffering *eleven*
miscarraiges. She adopted two kids (me included), then found herself
pg with my brother. Her placenta had grown outside the uterus,
attached to bladder, apparently it was *everywhere*. She had a
radical hysterectomy during my brother's birth, and the drs. told my
dad to start making funeral arrangements because they were 90% sure
sh'ed die. (Imagine my dad with kids 3 years, ten months, and a day
old!)

Anyway, she didn't wake up for several days. She went on to nurse my
brother for over a year.

What made the breastfeeding experience for her was a kind nurse who
brought my brother to her every 2 hours, held him for her while he
nursed, encouraged her, patted her on the back, and kept doing it, day
after day. My mom says she was so out of it during that time that she
never would have breastfed if not for that one nurse, who knew my mom
waned to nurse, and knew she'd desperately regret it if she wasn't
able to.

BTW, my mom wasn't given any drugs to increase supply-- just steady
2-hour nursing sessions. And my brother had been bottlefed formula
all along, so it really is remarkable that she was able to
successfully feed him. :)
