Parents are reluctant to send visitors away because they want to show off
their new little one, especially if it's their first! Most of the women I
have worked with feel it is a right of sorts, to have the most visitors that
they forget the baby does need to eat. The idea of puting some sort of
sign on the door to "warn" visitors that baby is nursing for those that
can't handle it I think is great. But. I also think if we continue to hide
breastfeeding by discouraging nursing around others, perpetuates the problem
our culture has with nursing babies.

Maybe a nice BIG sign on the door "Thanks for visiting us. We are happy
you are here to meet our new baby! Our baby is learning to breastfeed so we
may not fully dressed, but do feel free to come on in!" And then an
alternate sign on the backside, maybe-"Baby and mom are working hard at
learning to breastfeed. We should be finished shortly. Please let the nurses
know you are waiting to visit and we'll let you know when we are finished!"
This way it gives the mother the choice of having the visitors but let's
everyone know they may be walking in on a partially nude mama or gives the
mom he option of asking for visitors to wait.

And certainly having the nursing staff come in as if for a BP check and
matter-of factly state something to the effect of- it's time to try and get
baby to nurse, again! Would you like your visitors to stay or wait
outside/come back later? Again, if it is viewed as normal from the get-go
maybe we can get over this "hide in the bathroom to feed the baby" sydrome
we have in the US.
