Dear colleagues:

I'm still nomail (and working on the issue of vitamin D supplementation in
the breastfed baby) but thought I'd let you know that my article, '"Helping
Mothers Create Breastfeeding Allies," was just published. It is featured in
the December 2001-January 2002 issue of LEAVEN (Volume 37, number 6, pp.
123-127). If you don't subscribe to LEAVEN but are interested in reading
the article, please feel free to contact your local LLL Leader. I expect
the article to be indexed in LLLI's database of articles accessible via its
website sometime during the next couple of months. [You can find
LLLI-published articles by searching the LLLI website
(www.lalecheleague.org) by author, title, etc.] As soon as it's indexed,
I'll add a link to it in the publications page of my website (accessible
from http://home.attbi.com/~ammawell). The article outlines steps showing
how principles of negotiation can be used in the context of breastfeeding
persuasion, addresses the influence of cultural values on conflict
resolution, and includes information on how to find resources that might be
of help in legal and other situations. Here's an excerpt:

"The creation of an ally is a form of negotiation or persuasion. A mother
wants someone to do something that he is not already doing: support
breastfeeding in a particular situation. Many approaches to persuasion
exist. Given that ignorance often underlies a lack of breastfeeding
support, effective persuasion almost always involves breastfeeding
education. This takes some homework--and even a little strategy."

Happy holidays,

Cynthia

little one.)
