Cindy,

Thanks for the alert. I am sad.

I went to the site you posted and was immediately met with a letter,
written for lactivists, and explaining the nature of the difficult
choice Dr. Sears has made. I can see where he is coming fron, however, I
am no less concerned!

Why the concern? Parents who trust Dr. Sears (because doulas, nurses,
childbirth educators and lactation consultants like myself encourage
them to) will now have to be bombarded, once again, with formula ads
when they look to him for advice. But, even more serious I think, is the
liklihood that other professionals will see this as an example and
follow suit.

As you know I have been corresponding with the editor of "Pediatric
Nursing" over ads for store bought and national brand formulas in their
professional journal. I expect to be portrayed as an unreasonable
activist in the upcoming edition which will post my letter to the editor
along with a response. Now, if one of our allies, Dr. Sears, signs on
and does exactly what they are doing........what leg do I have to stand
on?

To be honest, if a parent knows how to access the internet, I am sure
they can find a site selling store brand formulas and explaining why
they are "just as good" as the big names. I don't think that parent
needs Dr. Sears to do that. I am amazed at how professionals can justify
acceptance of income when it comes their way.

So discouraging!

Susan
