Pat,
I used to feel the same way, concerned about test weights' effect on mom, but have found it to be another useful piece of data in formulating interventions. It's all in how you handle it. I ask mom about her gut feelings about how baby is doing, and can often reassure her. I usually don't give specific numbers unless it's good or she asks, then I put it in context.
