Rachel knew it. As a breastfeeding counsellor I can say that a
delayed first feed from the breast seems to be quite usual with
CS babies. The delay is too often 6-12 h or more at least with
mothers who later develop breastfeeding difficulties and call us
or come to our support groups. (Well, it isint the mothers but
the hospital setting that develop problems...) But since every
hospital (with labour and maternity wards) has the milk bank the milk
given to the newborns is usually donated and patoralized human milk
(which doesnt have left any living cells...). Allergy doctors say that
the missing skin (and perineum) contact might be the factor that
increases allergy in CS babies besides breastfeeding versus AIM.
