Suzanne, KimAnn et al,

I have frequently used this comparison in talking with parents as well as
docs. Without taking any position on whether or not boy should be circ'd, I
point out that clipping the frenulum is a far less invasive/traumatic
procedure. It serves as an argument in favor of clipping when talking with
docs (unfortunately it doesn't sway very many, but I keep trying). Parents
usually don't know what's involved, and tend to be very concerned when you
mention clipping as they immediately think of it as a big surgical procedure
(that view often reinforced by docs who are anti-clipping) so when I point
this out, they are much more relaxed about the possibility of having it
done. I find that even parents of girls are aware of the casual approach to
doing a circ in the maternity unit. They nay have even known of an adult or
older child who had it done, in which case it is much more involved that
with a newborn.

It concerns me when even docs who will clip take a "wait and see if it
causes a problem" attitude. Yes, some babies seem to do fine even with what
we might view as a severe tongue limitation. However, I have seen a few
infants where the procedure wasn't done until it was obvious there was a
problem. Unfortunately, by that time, the baby had established its nursing
techniques and in some cases it took some effort to "convince" the baby that
its tongue was now more mobile and took some retraining until nursing was
going well. Since it is such a mild procedure, it makes more sense to me to
have it clipped if it is obvious rather than to compromise breastfeeding by
waiting and acting after a problem has been established.

Winnie
