I have this nasty stack of August lactnets I'm trying to hack my way
through, and just read the posts about breastfed babies who ended up in
orthodontia, some because of thumb-sucking.

A thought:

Is modern life too boring for babies? Are they sucking their thumbs not
because sucking needs aren't met at breast but because 4 walls with no one
around but mom is just not what they thought life would be? Would those
same babies give up their thumbs if they lived in tribal villages?
