New poster here: Colleen Huber, 2nd year D.O. student, mother of 7-month
old boy. Greetings.
Please be cautious regarding mammograms, for yourselves and your patients.
In recent testimony before the White House Commission on Complementary and
Alternative Medicine Policy, Dr. Burton Goldberg cited research that
mammography causes cancer in a significant number of women. A better
technique is advanced thermography for breast cancer screening, which is a
non-invasive, safer way to detect the early formation of pathological
angiogenesis related to tumor growth years before mammography can image the
tumor itself.
Remember all ionizing radiation is cumulative over the course of your
life. Women who begin their doctors' recommended mammograms at 40, who
otherwise have every reason to expect good longevity, are facing 40-60
years of cumulative x-rays directed at their breasts, if they continue to
obey such instructions.
As Andrew Weil. M.D. says in Natural Health, Natural Medicine: "There is no
such thing as a safe dose of radiation. Your risk of genetic and immune
system damage correlates with the total amount of radiation you have
received over your lifetime, and any amount, however small, adds to that
cumulative total and risk. Never believe anyone who tells you that the
amount of radiation coming at you from any source is too small to matter."
Let's not be so fearful of breast cancer that we incur increased risks of
it in our attempts to detect it.
Colleen Huber
