Permission to post from mother.

First time mom, delivered full term baby who nursed well from the
beginning. Baby is now 8 days old. Milk came in on day 4. Started with
what seemed like normal engorgement and quickly progressed to something
more (and then some!). Over the next couple of days, mother was no longer
to get baby to breast as the breast was too tight.

She has been followed the entire time by both lactation consultant and
nursing staff (when she showed up in the middle of the night terribly
engorged). She is pumping off at least 8-10 ounces every 3 hours and gets
up to 20 ounces if she leaves the pump on until she is feels comfortable.
At this point, the baby is unable to latch due to the fullness. She has
tried partailly pumping down to relieve the fullness and attach the baby
but due to the volume still there, cannot obtain latch. The only time
recently that nursing has been possible is when copious amounts of milk are
removed, and pt is afraid that by doing so, she is making the problem
worse....I tend to agree given what I have seen so for.

I have referrerd her to her primary doctor for a check up and talked to
here about herbd to reduce supply (but am not optimistic given the
magnitude of the problem). Cold pack and cabbage are being used. Anything
else to suggest?
