I used to think the UK was a civilized country too. However, my expereince
of working with asylum seekers and refugees for some years has disabused me
of that notion. (I am an esol teacher).

For some years I was on an email list which sent a digest of asylum matters
from the press etc. which included stories from the UK and across the globe.
In general the vicious inhumane and nauseatingly shaming treatment asylum
seekers received in the UK appeared to be no worse and maybe even somewhat
better than in many other western 'first world' countries.
