Hi - could you tell us more about your concerns?
>Thank you for your response, yes I'm happy to give more details. This bugged me all last night.

You say baby is gaining well - is this with exclusive breastfeeding?
>Yes to both. Baby started out at 75th percentile (WHO chart) and is now between the 50th and 75th (WHO Chart). Mom didn't remember what the 1 month weight was so I am guestimating trend.

What signs are there that Mom's supply is plummeting? Is Mom in pain?
>This is part of what I'm not getting -- THere is no history of pain. And from the time that I saw her in a group 2 weeks ago to now she seems to be producing about the same amount. Baby is getting a bit fussier as the progresses and mom feels as if she is producing less, but reports copious output. However the latch is very very shallow and there isn't consistent swallowing except during let down or compressions. So, on the one side things look ok, but on the other side not so ok.

Are you concerned that baby seems to be taking 3 ounces in the morning and 1.8 in the evening? I wouldn't expect this to be abnormal. Not sure if I quite followed, but sounds like baby is on the breast for an hour in the evening when demonstrating the 1.8 ounce post-weight. That doesn't necessarily mean baby needs an hour to get that 1.8 ounces and in fact may get it in the first 10 minutes and then spend some of the calories while nursing for the next 50 minutes.
>Cluster feeding is normal, but this babe is transferring small amounts starting late afternoon and is unsatisfied and crying by evening.

I worry that ongoing pre- and post-feed weights can lead to much stress for parents. I worked with one Mom who did this and she had a severe case of post-partum depression. In her case the pre- and post- weighing of weights turned out to be a component of post-partum OCD, though I'm certain this is not the case with all who do this.
>I worry about this too. I did not suggest that she rent a scale. She did this on her own. I do think that there is a major "new parent" anxiety factor here as well.

I don't know. I feel like things are ok, but then there are these flags of concern and of course I don't want to discount mom's intuition or feeling either.

Lea

From the description this sounds to me like all is well - but maybe I missed something . . .
