I worked with a mother who had a low milk supply, and used fenugreek. While
taking it her milk supply increased slightly and her baby developed horrible
gas, fussiness and explosive stools. The gas, fussiness and stools cleared
up when she discontinued fenugreek, her supply went down. She retried
fenugreek> gas, fussiness, stools and increased supply returned. She
discontinued fenugreek and resigned herself to supplementing. This was a
mother that I suspected a possibility of insufficient glandular tissue. This
was a long drawn out case that I won't share all of the details but her
second baby nursed well with some difficulties, had a few days of worrisome
output and weight loss (confirming my suspicians! of insufficient glandular
tissue), then took off and gained four pounds in four weeks and is
exclusively breastfed and chubby at three months. This family moved shortly
after baby 2 was born and I am sure the LC who assisted them thought I was
nuts suggesting such serious problems. Cathy
