We are working hard at getting Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) established as
the norm here at our hospital. The parents, especially many dads, are
quite eager and interested in KMC (maybe it should be renamed? KPC, for
parent care?). I explain the hormone interaction in both mom/baby and
dad/baby that occur when doing KMC. The dads like to hear that doing KMC
enhances their fathering ability. Sometimes, mom has to beg him to get
baby back for nursings. It's really nice when there are twins involved -
each parent gets a baby. I developed a tri-fold pamphlets that we give out
to all parents that focuses on the normal newborn, rather than SCN
situations, as there didn't seem to be anything out there addressing normal
situations. Our clin spec also developed one for SCN parents which is
given to parents in the nsy. We also have a special KMC chair that is so
comfortable one of our SCN moms had to buy dad one of these chairs for
Christmas because he was threatening to steal ours!
So this may be an activity dads who get hung up on feeding their baby will
readily embrace.
And don't forget male lactation!
