I don't know if we can assume that a husband would dole out a harsher
punishment than people who are in a position of authority for another
reason besides marriage. In our society, we would have to say that "We
belong to a community in which a group of strangers is responsible for
punishing us."
In this case, the woman's husband is the head of the religious group to
which they belong. We can suspect that what we define as cults are less
interested in women's freedom, but we probably shouldn't assume this is
always true. After all, the group obviously believes in breastfeeding,
while mainstream policies don't necessarily support it. Who is
progressive, then?
I find it interesting that no one commented on one irony of this case.
We often use the analogy of car seats, but I had no idea that some
states didn't require them. Just another example of how analogies and
metaphors can be unfortunate.
