Hello Doreen,
Brief reintro since I have not written in a while. I am an LLLL in
Bariloche, Argentina. I have and ME in Nuclear Engineering and a PhD in
Engineering Physics and work in Nuclear Safety and Environmental impact,
including biological effects of radiation.

More info is necessary on the kind of treatment the mother will receive to
make any comments. If she is going to receive external irradiation, then
there is no problem and she can continue breastfeeding. The gamma
radiation will not affect her milk. Side effects from external radiation
tratment are local, such as loss of hair and reddening of the exposed
skin.

If she is undergoing radioisotope treatment, then it is necessary to know
which isotope she is going to receive. Although I am not aware of any
radioisotope tratment for brain tumors, this is not specifically my area
of expertise and I might be unaware of treatment alternatives.

Regarding sources of info, the NRC, www.nrc.gov , and the ICRP , www.icrp.org

Hope this info is helpful

Regards,

Veronica Garea, LLLL, ME, PhD
