I had a friend with a 4 week old who had conjunctivitis. I told her to
express breast milk and put some in her infant's eye. She was doing
this. She went for a visit to her Ped. The Ped. said not to do that.
She felt that because there was staph on the skin she might be putting
staph in the infant's eye, i.e. the breast milk isn't sterile . She
precribed an antibiotic ointment. The mother's thought was, isn't the
cream no longer sterile since she opened the container? It is a shame that
there are so many Peds. out there who are ignorant when it comes to
breast milk and it's healing qualities.
