Hi All
Milk dripping from the nose is never normal. It suggests that the soft palate is not functioning well.
This may be as result of a cleft, including a submucous cleft, which may not be evident on sight. There
are however some conditions where velopharyngeal insufficiency, i.e. the soft palate is not closing off the
passage to the nose effectively, can occur without a cleft. The functioning of the palate is important not
only for feeding, but also for speech. The speech may sound hyper nasal, i.e. too much of the airstream will escape
through the nose during speech and the speech will therefore sound more nasal.
It will be important to refer the child to a local cleft lip and palate team to exclude a cleft or look into
the possibility of an associated syndrome.

On a different note. I will be in Vancouver 23-26 July. Wonder whether there is anyone on the list
who would like to meet and to fill me in on breastfeeding Vancouver way. Some of my interests are
tongue tie treatment, SLT's and LC's working in teams, BFHI, but happy to meet anyone from the list.
Please mail me privately.
