I have also found many have problems with the non-cycling battery
pumps. On occasion I talk to a multip who reports she had used the
Evenflo with a previous child and it worked fine for her.
(Incidentally, Evenflo is the only one of the group-including Gentle
Expressions, MagMag, First Years-that I have ever heard anyone
liking. Perhaps this is attributable to the fact that it is, at
least around here, the most widely available one, or perhaps it
isn't as bad as the others (I hesitate to say it's "better").
What I tell moms is "I don't know what percentage of moms use and
like the battery/electric type pumps (as opposed to fully electric
hospital grade-I know you can get battery packs, but that isn't the
primary means of power for them). What I can tell you is that the
vast majority of moms who call us with problems pumping are using
that kind." Some who already have one before baby is born will say
they will go ahead and try it. Others say they will try to return
it and get a better one. For those who plan to go ahead and use it,
I tell them if is either not getting much milk or hurts, it is in
all likelihood that the problem is with the pump, not that pumping
won't work for them. I point out that the ones it works for are
moms with well-established milk supplies who are only pumping for a
part of baby's feedings. It is quite different to be using the pump
to help or completely establish the supply in the first place as in
the case of a baby starting out in the NICU.
When parents are going to go ahead and use the Evenflo (or similar
one) I make sure they have information on rental in case they find
that it isn't working for them.

Winnie
