Hi friends-I'd like some input please. I have a friend who had twins at 29
weeks. Birth weights were around 460 and 840 gms (girl and boy respectively).
Boy is doing well. The girl, who was quite IUGR, has had a tough course. Both
are getting gavage feeds with expressed breast milk. Mom (a nurse herself,
and quite well educated in breastfeeding) has developed nipple thrush. She is
treating it with antifungals, but questioned whether she should continue to
save the milk for the babies, because they are so preterm. Or would it be a
risk to them? I contacted the Georgetown Lactation Center, and the LC there
said they do NOT withhold the milk, even for NICU babies. Mom is worried,
tho, and I told her I'd try to gain as much info as possible. Anyone know any
references of any sort? There is nothing in my usual texts/resources on this.
HELP? Babies are now 32 weeks post conceptual age-boy 990 gms. and girl at
450. Thanks!!
