<< I have been very discouraged over the last week. The formula
companies have provided all kinds of "gifts" to the nurses in our hospital in
honor of "Nurses Week". The gifts include tote bags, pens, note pads,
penlights, mugs and the best of all.....a beanie baby!!! >>

The "gifts" have arrived at my hospital, too. I had a nice "discussion" with
the formula rep's boss, who arrived with the regular rep to hand this stuff
out. The other nurses watched me closely to see whether I'd shake hands when
introduced (I did), and what would be said next.

I refused the gift, and explained how and why it was against the World Health
Organization's Code for the Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (I said all
that....wasn't sure whether they'd understand WHO code). I also explained
that since the pens have the formula company's name on it, they couldn't use
them at work because that is advertising.

The rep's boss asked why I don't use their promotional materials. I
explained that there is misinformation in there, and gave him examples off
the top of my head. (I have read their materials, and am quite familiar with
why I won't use them). I also told him why their breastpump is a POS. (I
had been doing an informal breastpump inservice at the desk when they
arrived). He informed me that "Lactation Consultants" love their pump. I
asked who? He couldn't give me actual names of anyone in the area.....

La Leche League's magazine for Leaders (Leaven, April/May) arrived yesterday
and has a nice explanation of the WHO code for beginners. I am going to post
it today in the nurses lounge. Or maybe the bathroom (so everyone will have
the opportunity to read it).

Question: Does anyone know of a good, free infant CPR booklet? The formula
company has a "nice one" that my boss would like to put with the patient
handouts.

Sorry so long-winded this morning!

Soon to be opening a lactation center!!!
