Ann Calandro asked about breastfeeding rates in Africa. In South Africa
they are pretty dismal. A Demographic and Health Survey of 1998 indicated
that 10% of children 0 - 3 months were exclusively breastfed and 2% of
children 4 to 6 months. Now I know why we couldn't beat the Ausies on the
cricket field!
The World Summit for Sustainable Development will be hosted by the City of
Johannesburg, South Africa, in August. We have the opportunity to present
some information on breastfeeding at a forerunner summit to the main event,
which we hope will give us a voice at the main event too. If you have only
5 minutes to tell people about breastfeeding what would you include. We
thought of presenting it as 5 minutes of fascinating facts about
breastfeeding as underutilized resource.
