Jennifer and Amy (and all others),
For what it is worth...
First, I would KILL to work with peds/FPs who are as supportive and
knowledgable as you are supporting mothers. Actually, I would just be thrilled to
have a MD for MY kids who is informed!
Second, I work with an OB/GYN who said that he has no qualms about telling a
mother (pre-natally) that any mother who does not breastfeed is delinquent in
her duties as a mother. (His words, not mine), His concern is that when
and if he alienates a mother with that information he wants to be sure that
the practice is still supportive of that mother and she stills gets the medical
attention she needs.
I don't think there is anything wrong with telling the mother's that you are
disappointed that they are weaning so soon, you were thrilled to see the
baby doing so well (or something relevant). My husband tells me that I turn
people off because I am fanatical but I tell him that if one is not fanatical
then why should anyone else listen? If it turns them off, so be it but at
least they are informed. What is there to be excited about if the person
presenting the information isn't excited by it? Of course I am not a MD trying to
maintain a practice! But just so you have input...
