One other quick thought: In my former life I was head nurse of an
out-of-hospital birthing center (Family Birthing Center, Providence Hospital,
Southfield, MI). All our moms went home in 6 to 24 hours, and we NEVER had
any problems with bf. They were followed by phone for two days, and a home
visit done on the 3rd. I am convinced that the reason there was no prob.
with the bf is that there were no medical interventions during the birth - no
Pit, no IVs, no CNS depressants (very rarely used), baby & mom never
separated, baby always went to breast within that first hour (no IVs meant no
Pit after delivery either, so had to use the natural source :) !!) No mother
was sent home until baby was bf well, and in the three years before I left,
we may have had only two or three moms that had difficulties before
discharge. Our bf rate was about 97%, and shortly after I left we had our
1000th birth. I think things are essentially still the same there - though
not as many moms use the FBC because they can't have an epidural. The danger
isn't in the early d/c per say - it is in the combination of the high tech
birth with all its attendant problems and then the early d/c with no
followup. Ugh.

Bye for now.... just got my WordPerfect for Windows mag, and have to figure
out how I can type bf and the computer will automatically put in
breastfeeding. Such a life!
