Yes, there is such a thing as "nipple dermatitis", if you want to call it
that - it's just inflammation of the skin on/around the nipples, same as any
dermatitis. Caused by anything that causes exzema or contact dermatitis -
sensitivity to soap, water, baby drool, foods, stress, whatever. Heat rash,
irritation from laundry soap - the list of causes goes on & on. It (the rash
or sensitive skin) can also become secondarily infected by bacteria, which
is probably why Bactroban was prescribed, In my experience, docs sometimes
prescribe without really knowing what's going on or whether an
anti-bacterial is needed. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. It wouldn't be my
first step in treatment - but I'm no doctor!
