Hello. After a year of lurking and learning incredible amounts of
information I am excited to have a reason to post! My name is Kirsten
Clary, and I am the Family Advocacy Nurse Specialist at Brooks AFB in
San Antonio Texas. The purpose of my position is to decrease family
maltreatment for at risk parents through education, support and
referral services. I run the First Time Parent Program at our base.

Yes, Air Force aid has a program, called the Nursing Mothers Program,
which will provide a grant for up to six months rent of a hospital
grade breast pump to families enrolled in the First Time Parent
Program (FTPP). The FTPP is at most Air Force bases world-wide. To
be eligible for the FTPP one must be active duty or a dependent of an
active duty member, or one parent of the child must be eligible for
military medical care. We enroll pregnant families and families with
their first child being less than one year old. We also accept
families in which the child is the first of the relationship. In
addition to being a part of the FTPP there has to be a need for the
breastpump, i.e. employed mother, medical necessity etc.

This program has absolutely made such a difference in my breastfeeding
rates. My breastfeeding rate at six months is 67%. 83% of those
still breastfeeding at six months are employed full time and
participate in the Nursing Mother's Program. For the most part, my
mothers' supervisors are very supportive of their needs to have pump
breaks etc.

While much needs to be improved to support active duty and DOD
professional women in their efforts to breastfeed their children, this
is a wonderful and encouraging first step.

Thanks for all the wisdom and knowledge you have shared with me this
past year!
