Saw a mother yesterday who is nursing her third child, 2 weeks old. When her
first child was a newborn, 6 years ago, she developed mastitis in the right
breast and weaned within a week of his birth. She reported that since then,
her breasts have been sensitive to heat: if she exercises her right breast,
and to a small degree, her left breast, will throb until her body cools down.
She did not attempt to nurse baby # 2 but here we are at baby #3. She says
her breasts are uncomfortable even wearing a bra or a shirt so she goes
around the house naked from the waist up. This is obviously not practical
for day to day living, especially with two other kids. She also was having
problems with nipple pain but I think we have solved that with good latch -
when she came for the consult she couldn't wait to get out of her clothes.
She said that her breasts were comfortable once undressed, and reported that
the feeding was comfortable but has great concerns about nursing since the
metabolic process of milk production, which raises the temp in the breast is
making an already troublesome (for the past 6 years) problem worse. She saw
a breast surgeon several years ago about this problem and they found nothing
- tried anti inflamatories, birth control pills, d/c caffine and non of these
made a difference. It was manageable before she began to lactate and now it
is bad enough she is very close to weaning. She has a good but not excessive
milk supply. Anyone ever seen this?
