First I must thank Pat Bucknell for her response to our efforts to gain
amunition to justify our positions in an acute care facility, a Hospital.
Most of us, or may I speak for many of us, choose the path of professional
practice for the purpose of providing skilled, research based information
which involves professional training, skills aquisition, which is a huge
commitment of time, energy and finances. It is not cheep either. It is the
hours of training, study, practice etc. which distinguishes us from LLL,
Peer counselors etc., which are valuable alied services. For a number of
our clients, however the problems include more intense time, skills and
resources than are provided by anyone else, not to mention the professional
consultation with physians etc.
Our practice mandates that we keep our skills and information current which
also includes continuing education and retesting and payment of dues to the
professional organizations which are huge financial commitments.
I'm not sure about others,I have chosen this as my life work and I take it
very seriously but I do have three children to support and my income is
crucial to our survival as a family. I need this job in the hospital I
have devoted 25 years of service to and continue to depend on for health
and other benefits. I do "lots" of work on my own time, and I believe in
making services available to all.
Right now our consultants are, as I posted last Friday, trying to justify
our positions at the hospital in financial terms.
It takes cohesiveness as professionals to provide care that is in keeping
with our mission and our codes of ethics.
Anyone out there with business plan or documentation as to the dollars and
cents IBCLC's and make or save hospitals please send them our way.

Professionally yours,
Heidi Chavers RNC, IBCLC, LMT, LCCE, CIMI,
