I recently worked with a woman who had a 33 week gest. baby at a large
Toronto hospital.  When the baby had grown a bit and was stable she was
transferred to our little local hospital.  The mom told me she had not
intended to breastfeed, but the Toronto hospital didn't give her a choice.
They said," Your baby needs your milk.  You have to start pumping." She
took this strong recommendation seriously and is still breastfeeding 3
months later.  She appreciated their concern and assistance, and is in no
way resentful.  Had she chosen to formula feed she would probably feel
guilty, and maybe complain about the nurses making her feel guilty, but SO
WHAT!!!  Nurses have a responsibility to their patients, including the
newborns.  If the parents are giving them formula, the staff should be
encouraged to ask them why.  I truly believe that many change their minds
when they learn about the benefits of breastfeeding .
        We don't encourage anyone else to ingest those nutrition supplement drinks
if they have the option of real food and drink, why do we think it's a
acceptably choice for the most vulnerable members of humanity?
