I have a few questions for anyone who deals in a hospital setting. I know that answers will vary which is exactly why I am posting here. At the hospital that I work at we are 're-doing' our breastfeeding protocols and I am curious to know how other hospitals are handling these situations. Also please include if you are at a military hospital and the number of deliveries a month.

1) What are you policies on storing and handling breastmilk - how long can it be left out, how long in fridge, freezer, does the staff wear gloves?

2) General anesthesia - does your hospital state a certain amount of hours the mother must wait before breastfeeding her child after having anesthesia?

3) Once born are infants placed on mothers stomach and weights, shots, assessments .... all completed after the infant has had 30-60 minutes to nurse?

4) What kind of training does the staff (nurses) regarding breastfeeding?

Thank You
Jessica Callahan RN, IBCLC, RLC
