Hi Laurie,
Yes to everything you say. These are all my questions and concerns, as
well.
I was wondering about the supplementer and had mentioned this to the
mom. Maybe she'd like to try it--more milk to the baby in one nursing
may possibly decrease the length (at least) of feedings. I hesitated
pursuing this option because it seems she had enough to do getting
settled with the pump.
The mom had asked me, too, if her age had anything to do with it. I
played that down, because I also was an older mom (41) nursing a baby
eithout difficulty. You say the information is anecdotal. I knew I had
heard something about this, but didn't see anything in any of my
resources, so I didn't pursue it. I did mention thyroid to her.
It seems any one of these problems would be enough to decrease milk, and
there is more than one involved!
Yes, the baby maybe could be gaining better if things are improving
overall. I am going to ask her to weigh her baby and see if weight gain
has improved any since she started pump/nursing.
I feel reassured by your post that my counseling was on track for her.
Thanks again,
Diane D, LLLL in VT
