Hi, Kari Miller here. I usually just lurk, but I wanted to share a quick
story on nursing a foster baby. We had a local mother who decided to
relactate for a foster-adopt baby. The baby was gaining poorly and generally
not doing well on AMB, had GER, severe colic and on oxygen. She decided to
just use an SNS and alfalfa, and brought in a beautiful abundant supply. The
baby, of course, started gaining like gangbusters and doing much better:
fewer respiratory infections, not as fussy, etc. Unfortunately, she didn't
"get permission" to nurse the baby beforehand ( even though supported by her
pediatrician) and ended up loosing the baby. It was heartbreaking. As far
as I can tell, it's the luck of the draw. I have heard of similar cases
where the mothers were supported in their decision to nurse a foster child.
I wish it had happened for this mom.

Sorry for the downer! It's been a good day...sun on Pikes Peak, local LLL
conference plans coming along nicely and I'm a new IBCLC!
