I was part of the "working group" that met in the summer to work on the
possible "second credential" for IBCLE. While we were asked not to share
details of the work that was done, I think Lactnetters might like to know
that SOP's for both LC's and this "second credential" were discussed, and
many concerns were raised.

I felt some concern during the meeting that there seemed to be, in general,
a move to making the LC (and the lesser credential) an "add-on" to another
professional designation - nurse, dietician, physician - rather than an
independent, stand-alone profession. I also felt it was extremely
US-focused. There was much discussion about wanting this to appeal to (for
example) dieticians who worked for WIC (referring to the LC designation and
SOP) and peer counselors who worked for WIC (referring to the second
credential).

I think the idea is that people in these positions and roles would actually
prefer a more restrictive scope of practice.
