I was *sure* I had read - but have never been able to find a second time - a
paragraph in Hubert Bermont's "How to become a successful consultant" that
went something like this:

"A consultant is hired not for his education or his initials but for his
life experience. He is expected to provide ideas from outside the
mainstream; that's why he was consulted. He offers these ideas with the
understanding that many of them will not be implemented, or will not be
implemented in the way that will make them most effective. The client
understands this as well."

I see myself in those last two sentences every time I look into flooring, or
a new computer, or exercise or anything, really. I listen to what the
"consultant" has to say, then I go merrily along and do it the way I want,
incorporating some but rarely all of what was recommended. Everyone puts
his/her individual stamp on things, for better or worse. Part of our job is
to offer a range of options that would work, in hopes that something will
"fit" well enough to be adopted. And sadly, part of our job is to accept
the fact that some people are going to call back months later, wondering
what went wrong...
