" Mom asked what she could do about apparant yeast on
nipples. Word came back to rinse nipples with alcohol after every
 nursing and apply antifungal cream.
Mom called me (first call to me) to ask whether she should do
this. I'm afraid I screamed NO! pretty loud. I gave mom all of the
current yeast info I could find to take to the ped. She took the baby in
this AM for an immunization. While there she asked about using alcohol
in an open wound. Their reply was "how else would you sterilize it?"

Margery,
Ignorance abounds here too, but I did something that seemed to help here in
Lynchburg, VA. Last Christmas I sent each pediatrician in my area a card AND
a copy of Kay Hoover's full color, 4 page, thrush information sheet as a
present. This would be an excellent thing for anyone to do for WBW also. I
have had feedback from several that they read it, and there seems to be less
conflict about treating thrush in mothers and babies this year.
Lately had a mom call, had been sore for 2 weeks. When baby saw doctor she
asked "What is that white stuff in his mouth?" Doctor answered: "It is
bread in the baby's mouth." AGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!! This is a 4 week old baby
that was supposed to have gotten bread in it's mouth??????? Has been
completely 100% breastfed. I guess it fell off the mother's plate ??????
Anyway, that family practice doctor that was not on my list at Christmas,
 just received a polite letter:
"Dear Dr. Smith
Your patient, Mrs. Brown contacted me with questions about possible yeast in
her baby's mouth and causing her pain, as she is breastfeeding. Please find
enclosed a copy of the information that I shared with her. Thank you for
your continued support of breastfeeding" (I know, I choked when I wrote
it--but he didn't tell her to stop nursing, and we all can use educating. I
just hope someone is as gentle with me with my failings)

I bought 100 of Kay's sheets and sell them to the moms to cover my costs.
They are delighted, are able to cure their yeast infections and continue
nursing, and feel confident in the information they have as all the medical
references are listed.
If anyone wants information on ordering they can contact Kay at :
