Hello all,

I have noticed over the last few years that SOMETIMES there is a
connection between fussy, gassy, gurgly-tummy, screaming, "refluxy"
babies and thrush, whether oral, esophageal or some other type. With so
many moms and babies receiving IV and/or oral antibiotics, it natually
follows that thrush can occur. And, it is possible that some strains
produce more severe problems than others (perhaps those that are more
resistant to Nystatin?).

NOW, whenever any of the above problems are presented to me, the FIRST
thing I investigate is hx. of antibiotics, vaginal yeast infections, and
symptoms of thrush.

I have had more than one case where babies were subjected or about to be
subjected to upper GI studies, and when the possibility of thrush was
explored, history was significant. One mom brought me flowers (!)
because her baby did not have to undergo an upper GI series sceduled the
next day when she called me. Treatment from thrush resolved the
problem. Dad, too, was ecstatic.

Remember that white plaques do not have to be present in baby's mouth
for thrush to cause problems. I think babies exhibit an "off/on"
nursing behavior during the feeds due to oral and/or esophageal
discomfort. Screaming and fussiness may be due to GI symptons resulting
from the infection.

This is an area that is worht investigation. I have discussed these
possibilities with a neonatologist in the NICU of the hospital where I
work as and LC. He concurred that this made sense and "would be
observant and let me know" what he finds. Maybe a clinical study will
result. (Fingers crossed).

Anyway, you may want to check out this possibility when you have "fussy"
babies. I would appreciate any case histories if/when you find that
thrush was the culprit.

Thanks,

Sandy Hess
