Good question, your hospital is not alone in it's practice.  
It must be hard to balance the needs of many individual mother/baby pairs when the window is 2 days. 

This article was  written quite awhile ago to digest the "new" research on infant led feeding and disseminate it to LLL Leaders.  It does a good job and I've used it to explain to mothers why I am suggesting something different than they'd been told.

Looking through some of my resources I see that the recommendation of allowing the baby to finish one breast before offering the second is repeated in the breastfeeding management sections.
