It was my understanding that sunscreen/sunblock is NOT recommended for
infants under 6 mos. because their melanin is still forming and sunblock
interferes with this development. Also, many people think standard
sunblock has too many harsh chemicals.

In New Mexico, many populations live at a higher elevation (some places
over 7,000 feet.) I don't know the incidence of Vit. D deficiency, but
I'll bet it's lower because we get soooo much sun. Incidentally, the
higher elevation may contribute to a higher rate of jaundice.

It would be interesting to find out exact numbers for vit. D deficiency
from region to region.

Heidi in New Mexico
-- where our plans for World Breastfeeding Week include a formula
exchange--families are asked to exchange their hospital formula gift
pack in turn for a pro-breastfeeding baby T-shirt. We are collecting
all the formula in a big trash can, which will be on display at our walk
site. Makes a great visual!!!
