Jessica,
Your description of the stools--only once every 10-14 days, greenish,
foul-smelling and abnormal texture--makes me think of two possibilities.
The first is definitely the more serious problem and needs to ruled
out. This could be Hirschsprung's disease, where a portion of the bowel is
"dead". The stool builds up in the part of the bowel because there is no
peristaltic action. When it gets bad enough, there can be a complete obstruction.
This condition requires corrective surgery. The mother needs to ask her doctor
to test for this condition.
If Hirschsprung's does not turn out to be the problem, I have had a
couple of babies in the past few years who could not stool frequently. Although
these babies were gassy, their mothers did not complain of it being
particularly foul-smelling, which is why I think you need to rule out Hirschsprung's
first. In the cases of these babies, it turned out that the pediatric
chiropractor was able to help. In each case, he found that a lower vertebra had
twisted during the birth process and was riding on the nerve that controls the
intestines, so the messages to the intestines were not "getting through". Gentle
chiropractic work twice a week for several weeks helped move the vertebra back
where it belonged and maintain that position, and then the stooling problems
disappeared.
