My mind just doesn't stop these days...ever since I ran into Lactnet i
can't stop thinking of questions and comments. I'm suffering from my
first addiction I think! (for that I should be grateful I guess) Anyway,
first a comment about juice. WHile I agree too much is not good, after 6
months it is an excellent source of vitamin C and if I remeber correctly
( my text are in the office) breastmilk does not meet all a baby's needs
for this vitamin after 6 months. Now my questions: 1) I have a
colleague at work who recently had a baby and despite receiving a lot of
support, breastfeeding was not very successful. There were many factors
working against her (difficult delivery, separation, possibly poor suck)
but one thing that sticks out in my head is something I read on Lactnet
about a mother who had one breast smaller than the other and had
difficulties lactating. My friend also has a breast smaller than the
other. I would be very interested in learning more about this if someone
would comment on it. I coordinate a breastfeeding program with WIC
mothers and am wondering if this is something we should ask moms about
prenatally when we ask about inverted or shy nipples.2) This same friend
was given a supplemental nurser to use by a lactation consultant and when
talking about it the other day she said she doubted any lactation
consultant who recommended them had never actually used on herself...she
felt the tubing was very rigid and not baby-friendly. I have never used
one and am not very familiar with them. I would love to hear from
someone who has or who uses them in their practice. Do you find them
to be baby-friendly? My last question is about bathing with baby to help
latch on. As someone who supervises breastfeeding counselors who go into
clients homes, would you recommend that we discuss bathing with our
clients? I worry about liability....what if mom slips, baby goes under
water, etc. Yet it sounds like such an effective way to help mom and
baby get over a difficult time...i hate to withold this suggestion to
moms

TIA,

Laura
