It's the confounding factors I wonder about, although I totally agree with
the results of the study. I often joke that if it wasn't for breastfeeding,
I'd be in jail - I certainly didn't enter motherhood with an abundance of
patience.

How deep do they dig into parenting attitudes, I wonder? Deciding against
breastfeeding before a baby is born is a pretty strong statement about a
mother's willingness to meet her baby's needs. Wanting to breastfeed with
full knowledge of the health, emotional and social reasons to do so, but not
being able to overcome obstacles is a totally different starting point. It
would be interesting to look at results among women who didn't intend to
breastfeed but ended up doing so, or who breastfed one child but not
another.

This is really important research and has already been published in
pediatrics. From memory, women who bottle fed were 2.5 times more likely to
abuse their children (substantiated abuse up to 16 years) after adjustment
for the usual cofactors associated with infant feeding decisions )without
this adjustment I think the increased risk was 5x?). As the article says,
he'll be out here in March- to speak on ABA's travelling health
professionals seminar roadshow. I would encourage anyone who has links to
those working in child protection, with "at risk" dyads or family law to
pass on info about his paper and the seminar (which I think is offered
online as well as in person in Australian cities so available to anyone).
