This is so true. I wish that there was a way to bridge a discussion of the
importance of nutrition during breastfeeding without "scaring off" the
average mom.

My experience contradicts this. I, a breastfeeding mom, do need meat in my
diet (though I doubt it is because I am breastfeeding). I have been working
with a nutritionist and an MD and through my own experience and various
tests (Amino Acid, EFA, Organic Acid, etc) I do not function well nor do I
feel healthy without animal protein. We do eat nearly 100% organic,
grass-fed meats.

Out of my 3 older children who have also been evaluated, 2 need animal
protein one would do fine on a vegetarian/ vegan diet.

While I do believe that many moms do as well or better on a vegetarian/
vegan diet, through my experience and reading, I would say that an equal
number would be better off with high quality animal proteins.

I too have seen, and the research supports, a high level of reactivity to
milk. However, I have also seen infants who react to factory farm milk in
their mother's diet do fine when she consumes organic or raw milks.

With all of our varied evolutionary background it would seem logical that
our nutritional needs would vary as well. :)
