Dear Ladies,
I have worked with a grand total of three Down's Syndrome babies.
One gained really fast but was bottle feed her mama's milk.
The other two got pumped milk in the beginning but were primarily at the
breast after 6 weeks or so. Even though they had access to more
calories by bottle if they wanted them, they gained super, super slow.
2 oz per week or so, sometimes as many as 4 oz. They both seemed
healthy and vigorous, looked chubby, the drs were concerned but not
alarmed. Both mothers said to me that being over weight is a life long
challenge for Down's Syndrome children so having slow weight gain was
fine with them.
There is a special weight gain chart for Down's Syndrome babies but I
found that even with that these babies were gaining slowly.
Having better lung capisity, higher IQ, better oral, tongue, jaw, facial
muscular development were also important factors for these mothers to
make sure breastfeeding work. Both these babies nursed for over 1 year.
Just my clinical experience.
Thank you,
Barbara Robertson, MA, IBCLC, RLC
