I agree with you, Nina.

However... from the standpoint of the nursery/ob nurse? These new formulas
really clear out the intestines of a newborn. Honestly, I have never seen
anything like it. Instead of quarter size, or smear, or "small amount" I
have seen a cup of stool come out of a 12-hour baby. And the majority of
newborns I witnessed who were on the new DHA/ARA formulas are passing
non-meconium stools by the second day. I don't know how it was with the "old
formulas" but locally, all that is being used is the DHA/ARA A big downside
to this, I would worry, is the intestinal cramping and discomfort these
little ones are feeling.

On the plus side, perhaps this means that people are finally getting it that
bilirubin is fat soluble, and realize glucose water is not beneficial for
"flushing jaundice."

On another downside, though, perhaps the new guidelines for treating
jaundice have everyone so scared, we are forgetting the beneficial effects
of jaundice (anti-oxidation in the brain). Are we going to see a new
generation of children with issues related to not developing any jaundice at
all? Locally, the mothers complain that their babies are all being
considered a "high risk" for jaundice, and are being treated vigorously.
(early supplementation, immediate bili-blankets)

I am wondering if a more productive approach might be to ask those who are
suggesting formula as a secondary prophylactic intervention to provide
evidence (in the form of research papers) to support their practice.
