Connie wrote about restrictions on diagnosing tight frenulums. There is
a difference between diagnosing and assessing. Read the Nurse Practice
Act. It will reassure you. Physical assessments are to be done by
registered nurses in Illinois. Finding a tight frenulum, noting it and
discussing it with the pediatrician are all legitimate actions by an RN.
A parent certainly has a right to know what you have found on your
assessment.

That said, I have had very negative reactions from some pediatricians
regarding tight frenulums that I have found. Some don't see any reason
to clip it when they find the infant is healthy. A mother's pain and a
baby's inability to feed at the breast are often remedied by advice to
bottlefeed. The possibility of lifelong health and speech problems
don't move them to action. This is a sorry thing for many mothers who
can be easily influenced to give up. A mother who has been informed
needs to be encouraged to find a physician who values breastfeeding and
who will clip the frenulum.

I don't know who is deciding that the nurses are to take no action, but
there needs to be some administration support for the nursing staff who
are dealing with a serious health threat to these babies.
