Dear Lactnetters,
I've recently heard reports of moms developing carpal tunnel
syndrome
from using the cross cradle hold. In my own practice, I've found this
position to be quite helpful in teaching latch on to newborns. Has
anyone else noticed any increase in carpal tunnel syndrome or other
problems with using this technique in the early weeks? If you do teach
this method, how long do most of you advise telling moms to use the
cross cradle hold? I usually do tell mothers that once the baby is
latched on and feeding well, that she can bring her arm around and
cradle the baby normally if it doesn't affect the baby's suck.
Thanks,
Kris Rogers, RN, BSN, IBCLC
