Don't sweat the small stuff in regards to the RN exam. Honest.....You may
have one or two questions about breastfeeding on the NCLEX. I don't
remember any. That was almost 20 years ago. They look for things like
normal lab values, meds, anatomy, kidney disease, cancer, cardiac enzymes,
psycotic pts and medications, brain tumors, strokes, etc, you get the
picture...what to do first in assessing "sick" patients. You most likely will work
with normal healthy woman having babies. Learn what you need to for the
exam in class. Once you move beyond this semester/OB you will see that it is
just a tiny part of the big picture.

This is why nurses imo who work with moms and babies so badly need to go
the extra mile and learn on their own about breastfeeding and lactation
issues. You will already be there and be a great assest to those new moms.
It can be very frustrating when you KNOW more than the instructor about
lactation. Try to be humble when educating them. You will need them when
you move out of your comfort zone.......trust me.........
If you have any questions about nursing school and what to study for (since i
think you said they have a low pass rate on the RN boards) you can always
ask me off lactnet. I would be happy to guide you toward books and must
haves like lab value text's.

Wishing you the best in your studies,
robin an old L&D nurse, now loving lactation and the rewarding job it is!
