"I thought it was interesting that the feeling of the one who'd *had* the
feelings was that he didn't wake and then need me, but needed me and then
wakened."

Well, I think that he's the one who oughta know, and I think he has put it
*exactly* right!

When I was a kid, we were perfectly welcome to crawl in with our parents
whenever we felt like we needed to. As teens, we all found it quite festive
to sleep in the same room - when it was hot, for instance, and my parents'
room was the only one with an air conditioner, we'd haul in our sleeping
bags & air mattresses & spread them around. And on family camping trips, we
all preferred to share a tent. Now, with all of us "kids" well into our 40s,
there's nothing we'd rather do (much to the dismay of our spouses, I will
add - though not of our own kids!) than pile in together & sleep "en
famille".

Actually what we prefer is what we call "girls with the girls", which is
separation by gender (because the guys are boring, obviously), but not by
age - my mother, my sister, my daughters (and we let in her little boys,
because we're more fun to be with than the guys, who only talk about
computers), all together. We consider it an extreme treat to share motel
rooms, too, when we're travelling, and were apalled recently when my
sister's husband's brothers (both single) *each* had to have separate motel
rooms on a trip! Her sons just couldn't understand that one!

Unfortunately, none of the various spouses we've had over the years has
found this nearly as enchanting as we do! So sometimes we take "just us"
trips - no spouses, so we don't have to feel guilty about not paying enough
attention to them or embarassed when they see us acting like nuts!
